Sun EZ-Sport

I purchased this bike new in September 2004 from a local bike shop. They gave me a pretty good deal on it – $700, compared to $899 list price). I was drawn to this bike because it was reasonably priced (for a recumbent), and it featured a very friendly riding position, with a low bottom bracket and a comfortable seat. I had them add a cyclocomputer (Cateye Wireless) and a kickstand.
At the time, I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on something I wasn’t sure how much I’d actually use. At this time, riding a bike for fitness was more wishful thinking than a foregone conclusion. There was just as much likelihood of it sitting unused in the garage as there was of it actually being ridden, so the entry-level EZ-Sport was a good choice, I thought.
But it turns out I actually did ride it. I took to the recumbent very quickly. I didn’t put a whole lot of miles on it that fall, but I rode it a nearly every night that the weather permitted, and I loved it.
In 2005 I replaced the stock platform pedals with SPD clipless pedals, and added other accessories such as a tire pump, water bottle holder, rack, and backpack. I made one short trip in September of 2005, on the Katy Trail from Rocheport to Jefferson City (to visit my sister) and back. My longest ride of the year was 50 miles.
In 2006 I rode the EZ-Sport on BAK (Biking Across Kansas). At this point I was becoming disenchanted with the weight of this machine. I seemed to have reached a plateau as far as my average speed, and I’d experienced some knee pain during BAK. So I started thinking about a lighter bike.
Still, I think the EZ-Sport is a great design. It was an excellent choice for a starter recumbent. You can get on and ride very easily with no recumbent experience, and the bike is great for casual riding and rail-to-trail style rides.
For now, I’m keeping this bike and hoping I can interest my wife in riding it.
