Burley Django
Page posted by RecumBum
I purchased this bike in July 2006, used, from a local owner, for $700. I’m not sure what year it is, but I think it’s a 2004 model. Earlier models used a different style for the “Burley” lettering, and later models used disk brakes. The fellow I bought it from said he thought it had about 600 miles on it, but I’m thinking it had somewhat more than that, judging by the condition of the tires. On the other hand, I’ve since put over 1500 miles on these tires with no problems, so perhaps the tire sidewalls just had cosmetic issues.
Here are the bike’s features and components:
- S/M frame, maroon color
- Front tire: Primo Comet, 100 PSI, 20″x1.35″ (37-407), Presta Valve
- Rear tire: Primo Racer, 100 PSI, 26″x1.25″ (32-559), Presta Valve
- Front Rim: Weinman ZAC 19, 20″x1.75″/406
- Rear Rim: Weinman ZAC 19, 26″x1.75″/559
- Hubs: Shimano Deore FH-M510
- Front Derailleur: Shimano Sora
- Rear Derailleur: SRAM 5.0
- Brakes: Shimano V-Brake
- Shifters: SRAM Gripshift 8 x 3
- Cranks: Shimano 105, 170mm
- Crankset: Shimano 105 30/42/52
- Cassette: 11-32, 8-Speed
- Corbin Seat w/Gel Pad
- Planet Bike Fenders
- Delta Rear Rack
- Platform Pedals
- Bell Spinfit Cyclocomputer
- Water Bottle Cage
Once I got the bike, I swapped out the platform pedals for the SPD clipless pedals from the EZ-Sport. I also added a water bottle cage onto the steering mast, a rear taillight, and the Road Morph pump from the EZ-Sport, as well as a kickstand.
Later, I added a second cyclocomputer, rigged to display cadence.
In March 2007 I modified the gearing, swapping the 30/42/52 chainrings for 26/39/52.
In April 2007 I replaced the computer and cadence display for a Cateye Strada Cadence.
Mileage:
2006: 1272 miles
2007: 3860 miles

Nice detailed description.
And how do you like the Django?

It’s been my primary ride for nearly 2 years and about 5500 miles, and I still like it, apparently. I wish it were a bit lighter, but it’s been rock solid. If all goes according to plan, I may be close to 10,000 miles on it by years-end.

I am considering ‘getting bent’, but I have one concern. I have always heard that recumbents may be fast on the flat, but that they aren’t very good at climbing hills.
Given that I live in WEST VIRGINIA, this is a major concern.
The one time I tried to ride a recumbent two-wheeler, I nearly broke my neck. If I do ‘get bent’ it will be on a trike, I think.
Can you give me any advice?
