RecumBum is a personal blog dedicated to riding recumbent bicycles.

The emphasis in the preceding sentence is on the personal. The primary purpose of this site is for me to have a records of my rides, something I can go back and review later.

I’m not saying that to be exclusionary; just making a statement of purpose. That said, the site is publicly viewable, and I hope you do find it occasionally enjoyable or even useful. If something strikes a chord with you, feel free to comment.

About The Name

In American vernacular, the word “bum” has quite a few meanings. I prefer to think of the word as it’s used in the phrase “bumming around” (meaning “to pass time at leisure”, especially while travelling), or as it’s used in the the terms “beach bum” or “ski bum” (referring to someone “devoted to a particular activity or pursuit”).

Both of those connotations fit, I think: I am passionate about recumbents, and I aspire to travel on my bike.

I’m aware that there are some rather unsavory associations with the word “bum”, particularly in Europe and Australia (where it refers to the “arse”), and even in America, where it can be used to refer to a homeless person or beggar, or a person unwilling to work.

My wife sometimes calls me a bum because I am self-employed and work from home, and am thus free to set my own hours, and don’t have to commute. “What have you been doing all day, ya bum?” she’ll say when she gets home from work. In fact, there are many times when I’ll take off mid-day to go on a bike ride. On the other hand, I work most evenings, and on average probably spend more time “working” than I would if I had a regular job. So I’m not a “bum” in that sense of the word, and actually, she says it with good humor, so I’m OK with it (frankly, I think she’s a bit jealous).

There’s also the fact that I also love the rhyme in the last two syllables of the name; for some reason that just sounds good to my ear. And finally, when I was researching this name, I didn’t find it used anywhere else on the web. Not one single hit on Google, MSN, Yahoo. That means it’s unique, and that’s something that’s rather unusual on today’s Internet.

So RecumBum it is!
