Did a loop at Hillsdale Lake, going from the visitor center on the east side of the lake, west across the dam, then south to KS highway 68, east on 68, north on Old Kansas City Road, thru the town of Hillsdale, then back west to the visitor center. It was 13.64 miles with a number of fairly long hills, and a rather wicked headwind on several of them. All in all, a very nice little ride. The roads were good, and traffic was light. The weather, other than the 13 MPH wind, was glorious – 72 degF and sunny.
I saw one very odd thing: At the intersection of 68 highway and Old Kansas City Road, there’s a roundabout. I’d never seen one that far out in the country, and on a major highway to boot. It does the job, though, forcing the 65 MPH traffic on 68 to slow down. I wonder if that’s an up-an-coming feature of rural highways. I think it’d be a good thing if it was.
Hillsdale lake is a nice place to ride. There are hills, but nothing too major. The roads are in good shape, though there’s no shoulder in some places. The roads to the north, east, and south of the lake are paved. Unfortunately, there is no paved road on the west side, so there’s no way to circle the lake. That’s too bad, because it would be a great ride, with scenic views and a good variety of landscapes.
Todays ride left me with 25:56 hours of riding and 337.7 miles for the month, for an average of 13.02 MPH. That’s my biggest month ever, by a long shot. My total for the year is 1188.9 miles.
